Winternalia

The festival of Winternalia is celebrated in almost every nation in The YoungWorld today, and traditionally takes place on the twenty fifth day of December in the Styrish calender. Today this annual festival, occasionaly refered to as Christmas in some nations, has grown into the most celebrated date in the entire calender year.

In the modern world, Winternalia is celebrated through the exchanging of gifts, seasonal cards, and the displaying of decorations. It is also a time for families and friends to come together, settle their differences and look forwards to a more prosperous year to come. There are a great many beliefs and traditions that surround the festival, such as the decorating of trees, the eating of mince pies and the hanging of stockings above the fireplace. Some nations have their own traditions as well, some more bizzare than others, and even individual families will follow certain routeens from one year to the next.

Winternalia also involves a great amount of superstition, derived from myths and legends that have lasted for generations. For instance, during the month of December it is considered to be extremely unlucky to perform anything other than purely natural majic by any of The YoungWorld's majical community. It is also believed that a tall fat man with a long grey beard and a thick blue coat delivers presents to all children. However, the true story of how the festival began has long been lost. Some believe that the tale started when the YoungWorld was first colonised, while others claim that it celebrates the advent of modern civilisation in the region. One extremely unlikely theory suggested that the festival celebrates the birth of a child many millennia ago, but this is rather unlikely. Now though, what really happened is about to come to light.

This is the true story of Winternalia.

"The YoungWorld did not just burst into existance. I understand that this is the popular belief, but I am here to tell you the truth."

The voice belonged to a relitively young looking man by the name of Vin, stood upon the large rock in a small town in the huge and ancient nation of Corinthe. The rock signified the centre of the market town square, while Vin was a traveller and a stranger to the town. He was a philosopher, not a great philosopher, but he believed that he was at least an honest one.

"You see it took a long time for the YoungWorld to be formed, for the Godess herself to create our world it was a lot of hard work." He continued.

"So how long did it take?" Asked a child in the front row of the modest crowd that had gathered to hear the traveller speak.

"Years." He replied, which received a gasp from several listeners. "You see, our Godess required a few attempts before she finally created this final world. You can see the evidence in the sky above you at night. Of course, even here she did not get everything right at first. The YoungWorld was freezing cold like it is in mid winter before the Godess in her wisdom created our sun."

The crowd listed intently, as the had been for the last hour. Vin was a good speaker, his voice commanded attention and he could handle all but the most annoying of hecklers. He was somewhat put off however, when the crowd's attention was suddenly drawn to something just over his shoulder. He turned to see what it was they were staring at, but could not see anything unusual or eyecatching. Then he spotted a light in the sky, shining brightly through the clear blue of day.

"Ah, now that you see is another of our great Godess's creations." He responded, cleverly using the distraction to his advantage. "We call it a star, but it is just like our sun. A scientist once showed me that these other suns have worlds just like this one. Yes thats right, ladies and gentlmen, there are thousands, millions of worlds out there, the YoungWorld is just one of so many."

"Thats no star." Called a man from the back. "It's too big, and it's getting closer!"

"RUN!" Someone else shouted, and the crowd dispersed in mass panic. There was a roaring from above, and the star, surrounded in fire and smoke burnt a path accross the sky and disappeared into the distance. There was screaming and panic, then silence. Vin had ducked, but otherwise he was rooted in position upon the rock. The crowd had gone. All except the child from the front row, who looked up at him askance.

"Is the Godess angry?" She asked.

"No. No my child, that was a message. The Godess has sent us a message." Vin replied, a look of excitement spreading accross his face.

"What did the message say?"

"I do not know." Vin said honestly. "The message must be found first. It went that way."

OOC: It's a space station! Sorry, had to be said.

IC: "I'll come" pipes up a young lad. "My name is Daven and I'm studying the path of the goddess. Discovering her message and bringing it to my teacher is most definintely a duty and privilege!"

A quick glance over Daven reveals him to be nearly beardlessly young, but dressed in the manner of a druid traveling (brown boots, pants, and shirt, with a green cloak), and he carries a staff of wood that looks almost alive.

"Pardon?" Vin said, slightly confused by the response of the youthful looking peasant before him. "Come where? In search of that? Oh no, I never meant that I would go looking for it. Thats far too dangerous, the stuff of knights and heroes. Im just a philosopher, it is safer not to get involved, and you should do the same lad... What?" The girl was staring at him, shaking her head, but saying nothing.

"Look, I can't just... Besides I am going to Styrland, which is in the other direct... What?" The girl still said nothing, stood still and staring at him. "Alright, I will go. But you two stay here where it is safe."

With that Vin stepped off the rock, picked up his bag and began to walk with a long stride in the direction the message had gone. Little did he know that where he had been standing there had been a single ray of extraordinerily bright light shining directly down upon his head from high above. It was this that had caused the girl to stare at him so. She followed him.

Knowing that the adventure of a lifetime awaits him, Daven falls in line with the small procession. Taking his position behind the small child and Vin.

OOC: You can post more than two lines Scriv...

IC:

Vin had not walked far when he noticed footsteps behind him, following him. He increased his stride as much as possible, but the footsteps were catching up now. He looked back and saw that the girl was running along behind him, closely persued by the comically dressed peasant, who Vin took to be the village fool. He frowned, for he had not intended to continue on this course towards where the great flaming ball of what ever it was had gone. Instead he was hoping to walk just far enough out of sight that he could circle the town and continue on towards Styrland. He didn't want to upset the villagers, nor these two in particular, but niether did he fancy facing the dangerous path that lay in the direction he was currently walking. Being followed was not part of his plan however.

"I told you to stay there." He said earnestly, "It isn't safe."

"Not safe? The path of the Goddess is never safe!" Daven replies cheerfully.

His strange staff begins to glow an eerie green. "That is why she watches over us and protects us, and we should go and find her message." The green begins to seep from the staff to snake all around Daven and the small girl in front of him. The light almost seems reluctant to approach the old storyteller.

Shaking his head, Daven starts moving resolutely forward, to some extent not caring if the other two follow.

Vin was beginning to wish he had never claimed that the strange light was in fact a message from the Goddess. In truth he had no idea what it was, but he was certain that finding it themselves would only end badly for them all. Short of making up some greater excuse for a reason not to go there, Vin couldn't see a way out of this, so reluctantly he followed. Lost in his own internal conversation, Vin failed to notice that his strange looking follower had developed a green glow about him.

Their path took the three unlikely companions away to the East of the village, over farmland at first, then into a low lying forest. The path was a well beaten horse track, quite wide in parts and easy going. Vin knew however that this would not remain the case for long. He had seen what lay ahead once before, and had avoided it then by taking the long route around, months and months out of his way on his pilgrimage to. He doubted he would be so lucky this time. The child, for her part, walked quietly beside him. She was normally an excitable girl, but for some reason she found that her new companions commanded a certain respect.

Something rustled around the three it was in the tree's and definately not an echoe of the trios footprints on the track. "Now your a serious looking bunch if i ever did see one!" came voice. It was high pitched definately a womans voice . She kept herself to herself for the minute afterall there were still thieves around the town, those who didnt believe that faith in the goddess would bear fruit.

"Where are you going?" Came the voice again a slim looking shadow settling in the tree in front of them. "Were going to see what the message from the Goddess says" said the little girl beside Vin looking up at him as if to ask if it was ok to tell her that.

"The Goddess i see and you want to go this way" Another rustle came from the tree before a black haired figure dropped from the tree. It was a young woman, She wore torn short's and a straight forward vest that looked very plain indeed. Even by the young boys standards.

"You ought to be careful you know... theres some prickly stuff this way and some stuff the the east makes your feet sting". She tilted her head to one side and smiled, there were no shoes on her feet, her only accessory a little piece of red ribbon holding her hair back out of her face.

"Oh great." Vin replied. His day seemed to be getting worse with every passing moment. Soon, not more than an hour or so, the sun would slide over the horizon to the West and darkness would be upon them and it seemed that things could only get worse. Now there were voices from a tree. The girl beside him replied cautiously to the tree's comments, but hid when the owner of the voice climbed down from the branches and presented herself. Vin looked down at the girl, using him as a shield and he could feel her quivering nervously as she clung to his shirt.

The newcomer didn't look all that threatening. A little unclean and unkempt but quite harmless. She was clearly a young woman, though not of any great hight or build. In fact he would go so far as to call her petit and he estimated her age to be late in the late teens at most. By the way she was gazing at the young man beside him, Vin wondered if this straggly looking girl and the village fool were on familier terms. Neither appeared to be particularly bright, so perhaps they were related. Either way it was the last thing Vin needed, another follower tagging along for the adventure East in search of this fictional message.

At that moment the group were hit by an uncommonly strong gust of wind from the East, which shook the trees around them. Vin would have managed to on his feet if the girl hadn't dragged him down as she fell backwards. Somehow though, she managed to land on top of him.

"You would think someone of your build would be more stable on his feet" she commented with her hands on her hips. Walking towards them she picked the little girl up from him and held her so she was sitting on her left hip. "That was scary wasn't it" she giggled tapping her nose.

"I am Aeda (pronounced ai-da) i live here in the wood's" she looked down at the man with a smug look on her face as he got back onto his feet. "and you should be more careful when you have a little girl with you fool!".

The exceptionally strong gust of wind had been the shockwave caused by the strange phonomenon striking the ground. The strange phonomenon of course was mearly a meteorite, but Vin had convinced his two followers that it was in fact a message from the Goddess herself, even though he didn't really believe that to be true. The strange thing might just turn a out to be another disappointment in a long history of disappointments as far as Vin was conserned. However, he did feel at that moment rather embarrased to have been nocked off his feet by even a particularly strong gust of wind.

Vin picked himself up and looked at the woman with curiosity. She may have looked harmless, but she had a sharp tongue. He was also surprised at the way she effortlessly picked up the other, though the little girl was not really so little, for he believed her to be about eight or nine years of age.

"My name is Vin," He replied. "This is Daven, from the town yonder, and the young one there is..?"

"Lauren." She said, smiling for the first time since the had met. She didn't seem as scared of the newcomer now. "Can Aeda come with us?" She asked.

"She seems to know this land well, and while she has a fae countenance, i believe her aid is most welcome in this quest." Addressing himself directly to the maiden from the tree, Devan takes on an incredibly serious and strabgely adult bearing. "Lady, we seek to remove from these lands a foreign object that crashed from the heavens. We believe it to be a message from the goddess herself and it is my quest to return it to my teachers that we may learn her will. Will you assist us in our task?" This last question has an innocent pleading quality.

"Of course she is going to come." Lauren stated as she stood on her own two feet again. "Won't you Aeda?"

Vin did not need to hear any more. He was perfectly content to travel alone, and in the oposite direction for that matter. Yet here he was with three followers that had for some reason invited themselves along, and had convinced him to take an unexpected detour completely out of his way. So he walked on, not waiting for Aeda's answer. Lauren was also confident that Lauren would follow, and ran to catch up with Vin who had made quite a distance by that point.

"Come on." She called back.
