The capital city of Scrivneria has at long last been rebuilt! Ravaged by the events of the Nation War, and later destroyed in events surrounding the Demon Invasion which nearly destroyed the entire nation of Laskon, Seiner Imperialistisches Majestät Kaiser Matthias Scrivneri XVII hereby issues an invitation to the leaders of all nations in The Youngworld to visit his newly rebuilt capital. The new Imperial palace is laid out, as the old, as a 5-pointed star within the circular outer wall both to honor the 4 physical elements and soul of humanity bound within the circle of eternity (naming the city also), and with each wing dedicated to one of Scrivneria's 5 gods.

A feast will be taking place in 2 days time, and your RSVP's are most humbly requested. The Kaiser does not wish to dine alone!

With 24 hours already having passed since the personally addressed engraved invitation had been sent to all of the known leaders of The Youngworld, SIM Matthias XVII summons a trusted advisor to report.

"Well sir, we have as yet, received no replies" says Kyle Ravel, companion to Kronungsprinz Matthias XVIII and official party coordinator of Scrivneria. "Correspondence and the intelligence division indicate that our nation may have come through the events of the last several wars with a good deal more stability than others in the World despite the repeated loss of our capital city. The commonwealth reports that Madame Rigolo is nowhere to be found at this moment, and our allied nation of Mexihco reports that a change in leadership is officially taking place at this moment."

"What then of Laskon, Elves Security Forces, Nataniel, Freitzeit, Sir Lans, Darkest Souls, and Doramicus?" the Kaiser inquires.

"Reports from Laskon indicate that President Shrew may or may not be currently in power, and that there may or may not be any further correspondance with regard to any leader's attendance. Our messenger to the Elven nations has returned to report that the region formerly known as ESF is currently completely vacant. There is no word from the nations of Nataniel and Freitzeit, our messengers have been left waiting. Similar reports come to us from Sir Lans and Darkest Souls. The messenger from Doramicus has returned, and says he is thankful to still have his head, and that he does not expect Mammoth or a representative to respond positively to a peaceful overture until such time as you have made reparations for past crimes against the state. With a note that you should well know what these are."

"Blast, I thought I had made reparations already. Very well, please offer one million breves to Mammoth personally as an apology for insults given, and offer him the use of the newly created royal forge for any weapons he should wish to replace for those lost fighting the Nation War. Also, keep me up to date on the nations which are changing hands, and let me know if we need to reschedule the banquet."

"It will be done sire." With a fist clapped to his chest, Kyle silently leaves the room leaving the Kaiser to contemplate, not for the first time, the nature of Scrivneria's place within The Youngworld.

"What did you go and tell them that for?"

As chaos reigned supreme in the heart of the Commonwealth, it could be said that Sebastian Eves was at the centre of it all. Officially he was nothing more than a pen pusher, a rather highly placed pen pusher, but a pen pusher none the less. He was secretary to the Great Leader, but what good is a Great Leader's secretary when no Great Leader is forthcoming. He walked at a steady pace, his long legs striding through the corridors of Stape House in such a rush that those speaking to him were at a fair old run. It was true, at least as far as anyone knew. Michelle Rigolo was absent.

"I had to tell them something, they requested her presence personally." Mitchell Dhawyre replied earnestly. Technically the man in charge given the current state of things, he being the most senior elected member of the Commonwealth Council. As councillor for national transport he was extremely dedicated, but as temporary leader of the commonwealth he was somewhat lacking. Outside of his transport comfort zone, getting an order from Mitchell was as difficult as squeezing milk from an empty bottle.

"The truth was not it though. Now the whole world will know. All those nations, just think of them, laughing at us. We who misplaced our Great Leader. Shezz, may he rest in peace, must be turning in his grave." Sebastian reached his desk and sat down, ignoring the ringing phones. "We'll have to send someone, we can't not attend, it wouldn't be right."

The fact of the matter was that no one knew where the Great Leader was. The official story was that Mrs Rigolo had departed two days earlier from a dedication ceremony in the Northern province of Keller with James, her second husband, and they never arrived back to the capital where she had been expected. They were travelling by road, a driver with them as well, and every inch was being searched, but not a sign had been found. Where the real truth lay is an entirely different matter, but we'll get to that later.

"Who could go though?" Mitchell asked, "I couldn't... surely no one would expect me too..."

Several others voiced opinions or suggestions at that moment, most overlapping so as not to be heard as more than garbled noise. Sebastian said nothing, his mind elsewhere.

"What about General Tristan? Walter Tristan would do it I'm sure." A youthful female voice piped up last, once the other chatter had died away, and pulling Sebastian from his thoughts.

"No, no. Sending the head of our Army would send an even worse signal to the world. Far too aggressive, people would think we're loosing control of things. No." Sebastian paused for a moment, his hand held up to silence those trying to speak. "Esme." He said at last.

"Surely not." The female voice said again. It belonged to Reece Emgot, councillor for Education in the county of Mekha. "She can't be more than fourteen."

"Indeed she is not, she is but twelve. However, Esmerelda Rigolo is the next in line, the only heir to the Great Leader available." Sebastian didn't like it any more than the rest of them, but it was the only answer. "Unless the Great Leader turns up, or someone new is voted in, Esme is the only option we have. I will inform Scrivneria immediately, if you'll excuse me." Sebastian stood and walked into the Great Leader's office, closing the grand doors behind him to ensue some peace.

With compliments to his Imperial Majesty Kaiser Matthias Scrivneri XVII,
The Commonwealth heartily accepts your kind invitation to dine upon the occasion of the completion of your rebuilt capital at the Imperial Palace. Please expect Her Greatness, The Lady Rigolo and entourage at the earliest opportunity.

      Best regards

      Sebastian Eves
      Secretary to the Great Leader
On Behalf of the Great Leader Lady Michelle M. Rigolo, Commonwealth Dictate.

Sebastian sent the reply by courier as soon as the words were written upon the embossed, perfumed paper of the Great Leader, and the letter sealed and stamped. The hard part would be getting Esme there.

Air mail throughout TYW being one of the fastest known communication forms known, the formal reply arrives within hours on the desk of Kyle Ravel who runs at break-neck pace to the Kaiser's personal study.

"Sire, we've received word that a member of the Ruling family will be coming from the Commonwealth!" he blurts.

"Calm yourself Kyle, may I see the response?" Kyle quickly hands the note over, and the Kaiser scans it, his eyes seeming almost to see through the paper.

"Hmm..Sebastian taking dictation...the Lady of the Family as I recall is the eldest daughter of the sitting ruler. Kyle, please be prepared to take a personal note to the air dispatch immediately."

While Kyle goes to fetch the appropriate envelope and send word to the Royal Dispatch Office to be prepared for an immediate flight to the Commonwealth, Matthias sits down to write.

With Compliments in kind to the gracious Rigalo family,

It is so very good of you to come and see Our new Capital! As your scion is our only registered guest, I should very much like to serve her a particular favorite dish. If you would be so kind as to send word of the Lady's preference, I shall personally set the Royal Chef to the task. Fortunately, my son Matthias is home, so she shall some pleasant conversation with a more age appropriate partner than myself available.

Is it yet known how many shall be in your party? There are a number of dining rooms in the new palace, and I hope to be able to provide an ideal place for us all to dine.

With fond hopes that all is well in the Commonwealth,
In my own hand,

Matthias

"Kyle!" The summoned gentleman appears almost instantaneously.

"Sir!"

"Please see that this sealed letter is put into the hands of Mr. Eves or Mme. Rigalo immediately."

"It shall be done, and I hope, a glorious party will be had!"

"Indeed, so do I Kyle."

As Kyle rushes to get the letter to the post dispatch, Matthias rings a golden bell on his desk to summon one of the castle attendants. When the page arrives, he asks them to please fetch the Royal Cook as at long last a party menu can be at least partially planned!

The great city of Stape, with the five hills and the mountains North were bathed in a rich golden sunlight. A glorious day below a clear blue sky, and yet things were not as it should be. There was a chill in the air, the prevailing warm eastern breeze of summer had abated giving rise to an untimely change. All was not well and a cold winter was coming early. News had reached Rochester House that morning.

"I can not possibly go." Esme said in response to Sebastian as she sat in the summer house in the grand gardens of the house, a shawl wrapped about her shoulders. Long had the house of Rigolo ruled over the Commonwealth, since the saviour Marcus Shezz had married Michelle, youngest daughter of Beverley Rigolo, head of the first family of Tryanny. The marriage had brought peace between the two nations. If only a similar idea could not have stopped war with Makaar.

"You must, The Commonwealth depends upon it." Sebastian insisted. "A plane is waiting as we speak."

The Commonwealth Council had allowed Michelle to rule upon the passing of Marcus, who had sired a daughter from the marriage. Elizebeth had followed her father's ambition for the nation where her Mother had not. Michelle had turned against the Commonwealth and the Council had banished her from it. In the absence of a Great Leader the law stated the next in line would step up until a vote could be held. Elizebeth had filled the position, defeated her mother and as reward was voted in.

"What of my... the..." The thoughts upset Esme, there was a lot to get used to all in one go.

Elizebeth had married young and gave birth to two sons and a daughter. War followed, a conflict that brought the Commonwealth to its knees. Elizebeth lost her husband and both sons in the fighting. The daughter, named for her grandmother Michelle, had already taken a high place in the Commonwealth Council by the time her mother passed of old age. She had also married a Navel officer and had a new born child of her own, another daughter as though by tradition. Michelle became known as the mother of the Commonwealth, improving welfare and national health services in her twelve years as Great Leader.

"Hush." He said, taking her in his arms. "All will be done as agreed, and ready for when you return."

Esme was a petite girl with her fathers blonde hair in long flowing locks, bright innocent green eyes and a sweet smile. She had been given the title of Lady as per her position as heir to the ruling family, and also had very much her Mother's sense of duty, the proper way of things. Unfortunately the way of things meant travelling to Scrivneria in the absence of her parents, the fate of whom she had just learnt. A period of morning was normal, but the news would not be circulated to the world for some time. She could not refuse, however much she wanted to.

"Okay." She agreed with a heavy heart. It had taken some considerable effort to get to this stage, but in the article of choices there were few here. The Commonwealth could not go back on its word, nor could there be any hint of disparity within the nation. Esme would apologise for her parents unfortunate absence with a gift in their name and state that more pressing matters kept them at home. It was not a lie, such would not be proper, but an omission and enough to provide the nation time without the world's prying eyes. A few hours later she was en-route to the airport and her future.

To whom it may concern, Scrivneria,
The Commonwealth's visiting consort, Lady Rigolo, and entourage will happily dine on what ever may be served. However, I am informed that pineapple pancakes are the particular favourite, and with insistence from the Lady, pan fried chips must also be recommended.
The flight to your nation is scheduled to depart shortly.

    Regards
Secretary to the Great Leader Lady Michelle M. Rigolo, Commonwealth Dictate.

The hastily written letter was sent to the communications office post haste, and dispatched by signal telegraph immediately.

With deplorable weather plauging the Youngworld for several days, Matthias meets with his ktichens to acquire sufficient pineapples for a course incorporating pineapple pancakes, and recommends that one course involve pan-fried chips. With a bow the chef departs.

"Kyle!"

"My liege."

"Ensure the grounds are prepared for receiving our noble visitor and send a note back to apologize for our delay."

Kyle dashes off to write a quick note to the Commonwealth capital and the following is sent by the first available courier.

Most noble Leader of the Commonwealth,

We greatly anticipate the arrival of the Lady, with hopes that the delay caused by the weather will not keep her trip from occurring. In addition to the fine banquet that has been prepared, His Majesty the Kaiser has seen to the inclusion of her suggestions to the menu.

With delight,

Kyle Ravel
Imperial Minister of Hospitality

From thirty thousand feet the YoungWorld stretched out in all directions, cities tiny on the planet below. Sunlight glistened over the rippled water and reflected from the crests of cloud formations over the distant horizon. Esme looked out of the window at this fantastical wonder, a world she had seen so very little of. Some way off to the left Scrivneria could be seen, it's mountains and plains. The storm clouds were dissipating, the remnants of a tropical hurricane along the Laodicea continent.

Slowly the aircraft banked, descending through the atmosphere gradually, preparing for approach towards the nation's capital city. Esme wanted to watch, curious of the great beauty that could be seen from the window. Her attention however was pulled back inside, Sebastian was talking about proper conduct, and had been for quite some time. She nodded absently. On the other side of the cabin sat four others. Esme knew all of them well, some since she was a child. General Tristan with his dress uniform adorned with medals, Eva Prenvile and Rydian Yones from the administration, and translator Tom Farns. Behind her there were two more in the entourage. Esme didn't know them so well. One she didn't even know the name of, while the other was the Commonwealth's Ambassador to Scrivneria, Rufus Hurde.

An air hostess stopped in the isle and offered drinks, the last chance before landing. She ordered a gin and tonic to the disapproval of Sebastian sat next to her, but she needed something stronger than fruit juice before she faced her destiny. It had been a long journey, even for a long range aircraft such as this it required two refuelling stops to reach Scrivneria. The drink arrived and she drank it slowly, watching the ground rising up towards them. Before long she felt a slight bump as the wheels touched the ground on the hardened runway of a foreign nation. Esme took a deep breath.

At the TYW-Scrivneria airport (as designed by the leading architects in the Carnyorth Consortium) a delegation of the leading cultural ministers in the nation have assembled to greet the ambassadorial entourage from the Commonwealth ruling nation of Fort Europe.

Among their number are the head of the order of Dastinian Knights Sir Walter Trelane, the Chief Justice of Scrivnerian Courts Lord Gerald Brunheimer, and Kronungsprinz Matthias XVIII. The younger Matthias shifts nervously from foot to foot wondering what this meeting will mean. I know my father wishes to establish excellent relations with every nation in the YoungWorld, but is that really possible? How many nations now have stabbed us in the back, and how many more simply vanished?

As though hearing the thoughts of the Prince (and there's no saying that he didn't) Brunheimer taps him lightly. "Ease up lad, it's not a funeral! We're hear to host a young lady and a few guests for a big party."

"You're right Gerald, I'll attempt to loosen up as best I'm able." While the prince is speaking, all three men are watching the Jet pull up to the private gate reserved for the occaision.

Aeternia, the city of wonder, lay just beyond the aircraft door as Esme stood looking at it. She wondered what she would find on the other side, what strange new place and its people awaited her arrival. She didn't feel important, far from it, but she knew she was surrounded by important people. Ambassador Hurde was in front of her, he would be the first to step out followed by the short woman she didn't know, then there were two tall men in suits. Esme liked the look of the one on the right best. The others on the aircraft waited behind her. There were two more men in suits and a few others that had been sat in a different part of the aircraft. She smiled back at a short girl who she knew well, Esme's handmaiden of sorts.

Ria was Esme's best friend, though she was a year older and employed as a personal assistant. They had known each other only a year or so, but they went everywhere together, whether it was part of Ria's duties or not. They had even had parties and sleep overs together, they got on that well. Esme had never really been allowed friends at home, security being the optimum watchword of her family life. In that Ria had been a godsend.

Esme returned her attention forwards. She wondered a little more at the mysterious woman next to the Ambassador, who was now giving orders various people. Perhaps she was the boss of the four men, Esme certainly found these men curious, and thought them all very attractive looking. She wondered if she... The door opened, her thoughts interrupted. Bright light glared in through the open doorway, dazzling her vision for a moment. Those in front of her stepped forwards, and she felt an gentle push from behind. Sebastian's hand rested on her shoulder and guided her out into the open air.

There were steps leading down from the door to the ground, where the servicing area of the busy airport stretched on either side. Directly in front of her as she reached stepped down onto the concrete, was a small delegation of people stood in front of a great terminal building. She looked on with a mild interest as the Ambassador reached the delegation, said a few small niceties, then turned to introduce Esme.

Matthias hadn't rightly understood most of the introductions, despite being 80 years old, he looked and had the questionable social skills of a bookish man of 20. Having missed the official's name his request to approach the lady came out "By your leave Ambassador?" Receiving an indulgent nod from the foreign official, Matthias swept out his front leg and with a sweep of his hand gave a full low bow, catching the lady's hand on his way up. "If you'll forgive me my lady, it is truly a pleasure to meet you." Seeing Esme's shocked expression, he quickly kisses her hand and backs away resuming proper decorum, though his words come out slightly rushed and breathy.

"With me are some of our ministers of state, The Head of the Dastinian Order Sir Walter Trelande, and the Chief Justice of our Courts and the head of the Order of Hadrir Lord Gerald Brunheimer. I'm afraid father and Lord Ravel are seeing to last minute preparations of the castle for you arrival, and our other ministers are overseeing the return of our citizenry from their stay in our rural estates while the city was being rebuilt. Oh! Who besides your charming self are we meeting?"

For her part Esme tried her hardest to retain a neutral expression as she had been taught. 'A lady never shows any hint of exertion or emotion in the presence of strangers.' her mother had once told her. Never the less, when asked a question she could do little but look blank. The sudden shock of being spoken to in such a way by the imperial majesty of Scrivneria had stunned her mind and her voice was not forthcoming.

In any event, the Ambassador was quick to cover. Moving quickly from left to right along the now assembled group of people.

"If I may Sir, I present to you Councilors Eva Prenvile and Rydian Yones of the Commonwealth Council, General Walter Tristan, head of the Commonwealth Armed Forces, and Sebastian Eves, secretary to Madame Michelle Rigolo, Great Leader of the Commonwealth."

Esme listened to the names carefully, she was hoping to catch the one name she didn't know. However, the name was not mentioned. In fact the woman herself was not present. She looked around, and finally spotted the one she had been looking for stood some distance behind with the four guards and the rest of the household staff. Ria was also with them, and Esme wondered if she could introduce her friend as well, but the moment seemed to have passed for now.

When the congregation broke up and they were ushered towards the waiting vehicles Esme stepped over to Sebastian and asked him who the woman was.

"Ah, yes, thats Amy Sanders. I should have told you that earlier." He said, keeping his voice low. Esme knew the significance of the name, Captain Sanders was the head of the Commonwealth Intelligence Corps. It was probable that the leaders of Scrivneria knew a lot about Captain Sanders, she had been a close adviser of Esme's Grandmother during the second great Makaarian war, and had been highly distinguished in all she had done.

Sebastian opened a car door for Esme and told her she was to ride with his Imperial Majesty in the first car, and the rest would follow behind. Esme hesitated and asked if Sebastian would go with her, but he said no. He paused and then said that Ria could if that was preferable.

"I do believe Kaiser Matthias means to introduce you to his son." Esme took that information in with a gulp, and was suddenly very glad that Ria would be sat next to her in the vehicle.

On a slightly separate walk back to the small fleet of 1946 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraiths waiting to take the delegations back to the Imperial palace Matthias is being coached by his elders.

"Now listen boy"

"young man"

"you must not attempt to woo her."

"Be only friendly."

"This is a diplomatic occasion only."

"And we certainly don't need the TYW tabloids catching wind of another romance between nations."

"As happened when your father romanced the Matriarch of Jeianga!"

The constant back and forth with each of his father's advisors jumping on top of one another's sentences was rapidly giving the Prince a headache until finally he bursts out "Alright! I was nervous, you know I fall back on flirting when I'm nervous. It puts people in the same position I'm in! I'll try to be more composed in the car. This would be easier if Kyle were here and my companion hadn't been elevated to father's staff you know..."

"Aye boy, we know. But the last 15 years have changed Kyle much more than they have you, and his growth into manhood is much quicker - owing to the fact that he will only live as long as you've already been alive." The sad look on Trelane's face reminded Matthias that the stolid knight, while significantly more experience in the ways of the world, and still looking as fit as a 50 year old, was only a few years older in calendar terms than the Prince himself.

"Of course Walter. I'll keep a better handle on myself for the duration of the visit. Do you suppose she'll enjoy the ride enough that I can simply point out sights?"

"It's possible, but don't forget to ask her about her country. People do love to talk about themselves after all. Part of hosting is knowing when to graciously invite another leader to comment on the glories of their nation when confronted with yours" Brunheimer interjected.

Having arrived at the car, Matthias slid inside expecting to have a one-to-one conversation with Esme, difficult enough for him, to discover another woman with her to whom he had not been introduced. Freezing slightly, it takes him a moment to recover.

The transportation they were supplied was very luxurious. Esme could not tell what type of car it was but it sure looked pretty on the outside and just as nice inside too. She wasn't particularly interested in such things or how they worked but it was good to see how cultures differed, and the similarities as well. She could just about hear outside the car as she sat alone, three or four people were talking. On the other side a door opened and Ria's head appeared. She smiled and climbed in next to Esme. It was pleasing to her to have Ria close at hand in this vastly foreign place. It was unusual however to see Ria so smartly dressed, with a white blouse showing the Commonwealth crest and a short black skirt. Unusual because she was normally found in just a tight fitting t-shirt and trousers under a dirty apron.

For her part, Esme was equally smartly dressed, with a pure white dress in the latest Saldanhan style. The four islands produced the best linen and silk in the entire Commonwealth, and Michelle had always ensured her daughter kept up with the fashions. This one showed off a little of Esme's chest, and hung low around her ankles. She wore her blonde hair long, flowing half way down her back where a white ribbon had been weaved through the lowest ends. Esme was just about to say something to Ria when the other door opened and the Imperial heads of Scrivneria got in.

Long of leg and lean of build, Matthias felt distinctly awkward in the formal black uniform of a cut his father wore. The differences in their attire and general appearance were few. Where Matthias the elder had a few sweeps of gray in his well kept nearly black hair, the young Matthias had highlights of blonde, and a purely dark beard, which, like his father's was kept in a tight outline of his jaw.

The upper left sleeve of his black wool military coat did not sport the Eagle in flight of his father's heraldry, but instead his personal sign of a silver Stag. Due to the high humidity, his ensemble did not include a cloak of any sort, despite being part of the formal dress of the Scrivneri family.

On taking a closer look at Esme the person, Matthias could not help but be struck by the dissimiarity. The white lady and the dark prince. Well, this shall be an odd cab ride if nothing else. The prince could also hardly help but notice that the unexpected female was wearing what could only be described as a purposely distracting outfit.

Clearing his throat Matthias says. "I apologize for my lack of formality earlier. I tend to result to roguishness when I'm unsure how to behave in a situation. You see, I've never attended one of these formal state things on my own before. By the time I was old enough there were all sorts of dreadful wars on, and we really didn't have any."

Seeing a polite but not terribly interested look on the faces before him Matthias changes tactics. "If you'd like I could point out some of the more interesting features of Aeternia on our way to the palace. It's not a terribly long way with how the new highways were laid out, but it's a decent piece of the city anyway."

Meanwhile, in a separate, and more modern car. Brunheimer texts ahead to Kyle Ravel. "She's here also. Not sure how openly. You'd best alert your second staff."

The urge to giggle, a childish character trait possessed by many girls youthful in years, was difficult to suppress even for Esme. It was difficult when looking at the son of his Imperial Majesty, and even more so when she met the gaze of her maid Ria. The poor boy Prince Matthias opposite looked even more nervous than Esme, though she was doing her best to stay perfectly stoic in the presence of her Royal hosts. It was the first time she had ever met anyone of truly Royalty, though in a way her own family were practically Royal themselves these days. She wondered as she listened to the Prince's explanation of the cities rebuilding process, whether it would be possible to transform the Commonwealth from it's unique style of dictatorship into a true Royal Kingdom.

The ride was relatively smooth, and Esme sat upright with her back straight, her knees together and her hands folded neatly in her lap. The same could not be said of Ria though, who had a tendency to slouch despite her smart atire. Had Esme been less nervous she might have suggested that Ria close her legs and sit up a little more. As it was, Ria's short skirt seemed to be making the boy Matthias even more uncomfortable. She had no idea of his age, it was difficult to tell, and she made a mental note to find out if an opportunity arose.

"Do you have a theatre in Aeternia?" She asked when Matthias paused in his explaination for breath. "I do love going to the theatre." She added.
