The coronation of Esmerelda Rigolo had surpassed expectations. The event its self was kept fairly low key, with only a few of The YoungWorld’s most prominent leaders invited, but it had been very successful from all points of view. It was Michelle, Esme’s mother who had ensured that the position of Great Leader would be passed on to her daughter, invoking a clause in the Commonwealth’s laws and policies regarding the right of succession. Esme had not been completely satisfied with just being the Great Leader however, and had convinced the Commonwealth Council to pass an act granting the Rigolo family the right to claim Royal status. The process had been surprisingly easy, apparently due to an ancient law that had lain forgotten since the creation of the Bovingtonian Empire. The coronation though, was just an excuse to throw a big party, and it had been appreciated by a great many people. Almost the entire A List of The Commonwealth’s celebrities and dignitaries attended, while the crowning ceremony was televised across the five nations and beyond.

“I can’t tell you how much of a boost all this Royalty stuff will give to our economy,” Rydian Yones, the treasurer of the Commonwealth Council, had said enthusiastically during the first council meeting held after the event. “I can assure you though, that it will be a big figure. There is all the merchandise to consider, an increase in tourism. Everyone wants to be a part of this. The Commonwealth has never had its own Royal family before, it’s something special and the people are genuinely interested. It is better for The Commonwealth than we ever could have imagined.”

Of course not everyone had been so enthused by the event. Even now, so long after the Commonwealth came into being, there were still some in Bovingtonia who were loyal for the old ways and longed for a return of the Empire. Fortunately these few were only a hand full of extremists who were of no great threat.

***

Amy Sanders frowned at the reflection in the mirror that stood in the corner of her office. It was an old fashioned wooded framed mirror, an antique and a gift of sorts from her predecessor. It had belonged to Adam Snook, and had probably been in the office from the very first days of the Commonwealth. Amy could not tell exactly how old the mirror was, but at that moment she doubted that it was as old as the person in the reflection. She was growing weary, her arms ached from signing one order after another, and her eyes felt heavy from the reading of so many reports. The fact that she was old was obvious. She had served under every Great Leader of The Commonwealth since Marcus Shezz himself.

What was not obvious though, was what she should do about it. Retirement was a consideration, there were so many things she wanted to do, but had no time for, and so many things unfinished. But in her opinion, she could not leave her job. Without her the entire Commonwealth would fall apart in weeks, if not days. The new Great leader was but a child who needed a lot of looking after, and there was no one she could trust to do the job even half as well as herself. She had just resolved that a decision was needed when there was a knock at the door.

“Emma Hor’Gok to see you, Ma’am.” Amy’s secretary said as the door opened, and indeed the annoyingly youthful looking CIC agent could be seen in the corridor smiling brightly as she waited.

“Send her in.” Amy replied, sitting down behind her desk so as to appear formal for what she was sure would not be a formal visit. Emma had been one of the Intelligence Corps’ best field agents, and Amy had followed her training closely in much the same way that Adam Snook had overseen Amy’s training. Emma could not exactly be called young now, at least not by her standards, but somehow Emma still managed to look like the teenager Amy remembered on the day they had first met.

“Do you know who this man is?” Emma said, a grin plastered across her face as she held out a photograph. It was a formal photograph of a man in a very formal Mexicatl styled dress uniform of his office, and was difficult to mistake, the crest like emblem of the House of Iturbide-Habsburgo could be seen in the background. Amy stared at her protégé, trying to decide if she was being tested, or if Emma had suddenly gone mad.

“Yes, of course I know who that is. It’s…”

“It’s the man who has just proposed to Annabelle Prior!” Emma exclaimed, interrupting her boss, unable to contain the news for much longer. Had Amy not sat down, she might have fallen at this point, and for her part, she sat there with an open mouth for some moments.

“The Goddess be damned!” She said at last. “I must be getting old. How did I miss this?” Emma was about to comment on age, but thought better of it. “Princess Annabelle, the Queen’s cousin and a Mexicah. Where did they… how did they even meet? Don’t say he was at the coronation. I…”

[Posted for Mexihco]

Don Maximiliano was walking the grounds at the Imperial Palace, something he usually done when he had got something on his mind. He found himself a spot to sit under an old Oak Tree not far from the Palace grounds. It was a nice warm day, not too hot nor too cold just right. As he sat down he was remembering the first time he met Princess Annabelle at the coronation of her cousin Elizebeth Rigolo. When he first saw Princess Annabelle, he thought to himself “she is the one”. He couldn't stop thinking about her ever since they first met.

***

HIM The Emperor was in his study going over some papers and at the same time having a conversation with his wife The Empress. They were talking about Don Maximiliano's desire to marry Princess Annabelle of The Commonwealth. The Emperor thought to himself “what does Maximiliano see in this girl”, when he was interrupted by The Empress and ask him “What do you think about this whole engagement”. The Emperor took a long sip of his drink as to delay the answer. He placed the drink back on the table and answered The Empress “I don't know”.

The Emperor wanted his son to marry one of the daughters of one of the great noble houses but his son was set on marrying Princess Annabelle. He knew that Princess Annabelle came from a somewhat questionable Royal Background, however he knew times were changing, he didn't have to like it but they were changing. The Emperor ask The Empress if she agreed with the engagement and if he should grant him his blessing to marry her. The Empress responded “Yes”.

***

Don Maximiliano finally got up from where he was sitting and dusted his pants off and decided to pay a visit to his father and see if he would give him permission to marry Princess Annabelle. As he was walking back to the Palace, his heart was racing because he didn't know what his fathers answer is gonna be.

Finally he arrived at the door to his fathers study where he spent most of his time reading and what not. He just stood there too nervous to knock on the door, but finally he managed to knock. He walked in to see his father sitting at his desk reading some papers and his mother sitting near the window reading the newspaper.

The Emperor put his papers down and looked up in the direction of his son. Don Maximiliano asked his father if he made a decision on letting him marry Annabelle in to which he replied “yes”. After clearing his throat he went on to say “Son, if you really want to marry Annabelle then you have our blessing”. Don Maximiliano was very relieved to hear his father say “yes”.....

"Do they think we are fools? Forcing this Royal rubbish down our throats. They have always thought they own us, think they can control us, and now they put this child in charge. We are being ruled by a child people, a child! And now they.."

Okden walked away, he could not listen to more. It wasn't that he disagreed, far from it, but this was hardly helping. Wyllam Gnyze was a good man, a good speaker and devoted to the cause, but he was too naive. The truth was, Wyllam was not much older himself than the new Queen, and had a tendency to jump without thinking. Never the less, his speaches were recruiting new members to the cause.

Okden was older, wiser, and had the advantage of knowledge and experienced passed down from one generation to the next. He didn't care for The Commonwealth any more than any of the others stood in the barn that evening on a cold Tryad evening, but he knew it would take a lot more than words to bring down a regime as strong as The Commonwealth. What Wyllam missed was that this child Queen was just a figurehead. The five nations were ruled by the Councils and the councils were the true enemy. If they were to rebuild the Empire, it was going to take a lot more than just defeating the Rigolo family.

"Do you think they will want the wedding to be in that Imperial Palace? It looks so grand in the pictures..." Margret said, looking up from her embroidery. Annabelle's mother had been fussing for days, ever since she had heard the news, and Annabelle was certain that her mother was far more excited by it all than she was. "You'll probably have a great big four poster bed for your wedding night..."

"Mother!" Annabelle replied in shock at her mother. Margret had married Marcus Rigolo, the first son of Great Leader Elizebeth Rigolo in what should have been the most splended wedding in The Commonwealth's short history. However the event had been over shadowed by the declaration of war with Makaar, and Margret had never lived down the humiliation. Officially, her wedding night had been perfect... in reality though, it had been spent hiding in an underground shelter.

Annabelle wanted her wedding day to be perfect just like any other girl. It had started well, meeting a real Prince, and then his proposal. It was like a fairy tale, but that in its self bothered Annabelle. She had never really thought of herself as the marrying type, what ever her family background. Sure enough she was decended from the most noble bloodlines that The Commonwealth had, but she had never been enthused by all the talk of connection and heirs. After all, she was still young, not yet sixteen, and what she really wanted was unclear even to her.

Even so, she liked Don Maximiliano. It wasn't about his title or his money, she liked him because he was handsome, very handsome in fact. He had an air of superior purpose about him that she found appealing, something she had not seen amongst the other potential suitors she had been introduced to. She had only met him the once before his proposal, and yet she felt as though she had known him for years. He was kind, thoughtful and everything she had hoped for... at least thats what she believed. She had excepted him without really thinking, it had taken her by surprise, and once the shock had passed she wondered if she had done the right thing.
